How to Get Luscious Mermaid Locks

Get a bad haircut recently? Going for those luscious mermaid locks? Well look no further! Here are a few tips for growing out your hair!

Use sulfur free shampoo. This seems to be the latest hair treatment trend.  Sulfur is harsh on your hair (so they say), so the next time you go shopping for shampoo, look for a sulfur free label on the shampoo bottle.

Don’t wash your hair everyday. I have to admit it’s hard for me to take my own advice on this one! I have been swimming competitively most of my life, and as a result I am used to washing my hair up to once, twice, [gasp] even three times a day! This has probably killed all of the natural oils my hair can produce. So take note: don’t ever get into water sports. I’m kidding. But in all seriousness, wash your hair sparingly. Use a shower cap when you bathe, and use dry shampoo if you need to.

Condition your hair every two weeks with coconut oil. Lather it into your hair and let it soak in for an hour or two. Then wash it out! Also, feel free to use a small amount of argan oil on wet hair. Apply it to your mane after showering.

When in doubt, opt for heatless hairstyles. Straightening, curling, and blowdrying your hair every day will kill it! Save the heat for important days at work or school. Braid your hair at night if you’re trying to achieve beachy waves. Or go old school and use rollers at night. Rollers probably hold curls better than an iron can!

Wet your hair before swimming in a chlorine pool or the ocean. Since it is summer and all, I thought it necessary to throw this tip in. Shower off before jumping in a chlorine pool, or dipping in the ocean. Wetting your hair with regular faucet water first helps your hair absorb clean water. Your hair is like a sponge. Would you rather have it absorb clean shower water… or stinky pool water? Your choice.

Last but not least, get a regular, bi-monthly trim! Every two months make a visit to your hairstylist and get about an inch trimmed off. This tip may sound silly since you’re trying to grow out your hair.  But trust me, it works. Getting rid of damaged, broken hair will make room for healthy, strong hair to grow in. And who am I kidding, it’s fun getting your hair trimmed and styled every so often!

For locals: If you’re in the northern San Diego area, I recommend going to Hair Dynamics in Scripps Ranch. Dawn and Elena are both awesome hair stylists, and are super affordable. Pay them a visit and tell them I sent you!
