Feeling The Stress?

Our 20s can be a particularly hectic time.  It’s usually a decade full of change, adjustment, and temporary homes.

As wonderfully exciting as this time tends to be, if you’re anything like me you like to know where you’re headed.  You like to have a plan, a budget to fit that plan, etc., etc.

It’s in the past months that I’ve really learned how to roll with the punches.  Sometimes things don’t work out as planned and sometimes that budget you laid out for that plan is thrown off by emergency expenses, job loss, etc.  Sometimes we have to take a step back, realize we’ve done all we can do, and watch where the pieces fall (hoping that at least one has a safe landing).

We all have our 20-something stressors — financial stability, job security, uncertainty regarding a career path, etc.  And with these stressors we can easily drown in numbers, lists, bullet points.  Here are a few things I’ve found that help during a time when you simply don’t know what the immediate coming months hold.

1)  Have a plan.  Regardless of what’s come your way, having a plan is key into successfully overcoming a challenge.  Make this plan consist of concrete baby steps you can take in order to achieve whatever you’re setting out to achieve.  It’s the baby steps that will lead to success.

2) … And then don’t worry.  You’ve acknowledged the problem and taken measures to fix it.  Monitor progress and let it go.  You can’t do any more than that.

3) Document the journey.  Vlogging, journaling, inspiration boards.  Find an outlet that best suits you and document this time in your life.  It’s a time of exponential growth.  You’ll one day be able to look back on this time, realize how strong of a person you have been, and be proud of that person.

4)  Find someone who inspires you.  Find someone who gets you pumped up.  Oprah?  Marie Farleo?  Dr. Meg Jay?  My lady is Brenee Brown.  She became well known after this TED talk.  After a chapter of one of her books or an interview, I’m left feeling motivated and ready to conquer anything.

5)  Treat yourself.  And don’t feel guilty about it!  When money is tight, going out tends to fall to the wayside.  You don’t need to go to the fanciest restaurant in town, but going out and dropping just a few bucks on a nice cappuccino can leave you refreshed.
