My Favorite Podcasts

In California, you spend a lot of time in your car. In the last three years, I’ve become quite the fan of listening to podcasts while driving, or even while packing or cleaning! Since in the last two weeks my activities have been almost exclusively the latter two, I thought I would share the podcasts I’ve been listening to as I prep our place and lives for departure.

I use the Stitcher app to listen to all of these podcasts.

This American Life – One of my favorite college professors brought up this podcast a lot in class. I started listening then, and haven’t stopped since. Each week on the show, they choose a specific theme and tell a variety of different stories on that theme. They are usually true stories, but not always. It’s kind of hard to explain, but I’ve loved every episode over the past 5 years.

Freakanomics – In the opening, they describe this show as “a podcast that explores the hidden side of everything.” I’d say that’s definitely accurate. From the economics of sleep to revolutionizing the sport of competitive eating, it’s something new and extremely fascinating each week!

Radiolab – Radiolab is “a show about curiosity where sound illuminates ideas, and the boundaries blur between science, philosophy, and human experience.” Like Freakanomics, the topics on this show are vast and interesting. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve brought up thoughts and ideas from this show in conversation with my friends and husband.

Note To Self This show is all about the effect technology has on our lives. I spend a large part of my day on the computer and often contemplate this very idea. Topics range from the consequences of putting pictures of your kids online to what happens to your brain while online shopping.

Invisibilia – This is a show about the invisible forces that dictate human behavior. As someone who is considering going back to school for psychology, I find this show to be awesome. If you love learning about humanity and what makes us do the crazy things we do, this one is for you.

The Longest Shortest Time – This is a podcast about the ups and downs of parenting. I’m not a parent but I really enjoy the honesty that is shared on this podcast. There are so many inspiring moms and dads out there, and hearing their stories even before starting a family has been really wonderful.
