Birthday & Anniversary Weekend In NYC

The following is a condensed version of our weekend trip from DC to NYC. I filmed a bunch of clips and am planning to edit and upload a video of the trip on Saturday!

I have to start off this post gushing about my thoughtful husband for a minute. I don’t do this that often so just bear with me: I married an incredibly thoughtful man who always finds new ways to make me smile and feel special!

This past weekend was my 24th birthday and our 4th wedding anniversary. I can’t believe it’s already been four years! Gosh, time seems to be going faster and faster each year. We took the train up to NYC and after dropping off our bags, we popped into Bistro Moderne for brunch. This is one of Daniel Boulud’s restaurants. We ate at his flagship restaurant Daniel last time we were in the city and couldn’t pass up the opportunity to eat at another.

That thoughtful husband of mine surprised me with tickets to the new musical Hamilton, which just opened on Broadway and is definitely the hottest ticket in The City That Never Sleeps. The musical was written by and stars Lin-Manuel Miranda, who also wrote the first broadway show I ever took Matt to called In The Heights. To keep it short, that guy is INSANELY talented. After we left the show Matt said how it felt like we’d just seen an opus, not simply a broadway musical about Alexander Hamilton and the Founding Fathers. As a certified theater nerd, I can honestly say it was probably the best show I’ve ever seen. If you get the chance, don’t walk — RUN to see it!

After the show we wandered downtown to a really cool hotel and restaurant Matt found called The Nomad. The decor was a modern Gatsby sort of vibe with a massive cocktail menu and delicious food. I had pork belly and a cocktail that I can only describe as an elevated whisky sour. After dinner we wandered back to their famous library bar that was oober hip and cool. We had desserts of lemon tart and blackberry cobbler accompanied by an Old Fashioned for Matt and a cocktail called The Black Dahlia for me. The staff here was incredible. I can’t recommend this place highly enough!

Sunday morning we went to mass at St. Patrick’s Cathedral. I took some time outside for a few pictures, of course. It’s always busy here and the feeling of glorifying God with people from all over the world never gets old.

We grabbed a quick lunch at Dean and Deluca on the way to the train station and made our way back to DC on the Acela.

Like I said, I am making a little vlog of the trip that will be up Saturday but I couldn’t wait to share the quick highlights. I hope you all had an amazing weekend!
